  Stargate Source Shut Down - Off Topic

Unfortunately Stargate Source is being forced to shut down their modification to Half Life 2. Yet another victim of MGM. Here's what they had to say on their website,

We are very displeased to announce that apparently MGM the huge company feels very threatened by a group of individuals spread throughout the world. We have received a letter to desist from the creation of the Stargate: Source mod. At this time we are still discussing the issue but it does appear that we are going to be shutting down. Sorry to all of our followers and those who were looking forward to this mod. Personally I will not buy a copy of their game out of protest. It is an unfortunate circumstance when the large, powerful and wealthy must attack the small and free but it happens and it is buisness.

Sorry to all again, and please stay tuned for any official announcment.

TBH i think that pretty damn petty from MGM... Whats the problem with making a MOD? why dont you guiys start a petition and see if ya can get enought people to sign it to convince them otherwise?

they should just continue to develop it underground and flood the internet with it once the mod is perfect. stick out tongue curse you mgm

I dont no if they realize most of the time modding makes their otherwise lacking
game MORE interesting ------------------------------- even though this would be a
stand alone project (not including their game as a foundation like bridge commander) they sould stop fearing these kind of projects ............if you want to petition them I would happily sign (sorry I can mod or map to save
my life) so I would not be of any other use to you all . THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS!!!!!!!!

Amongst your esteemed memebers include the Stargate UT mod the Farcry mod and a whole host of others that have fallen foul of MGM

Just to bring some kind of equality to the subject, Stargate is MGM's property and they can do what the hell they like with it, within the laws binding them. The modders themselves know the risks they are taking.

But as on the other side of the coin, i do wish MGM would not pick on the small groups of modders that want to turn an existing game into a stargate experience, there havent been any (decent) stargate games released for many long years.

simple solutionm dont name the mod with the word stargate in it. I have a stargate mod going for bf2 but i named it Final Front so MGM wont think of it as a stargate mod. Visit the site at http://www.finalfront.net

I think its safe to say, if you are making a mod for a game, that is even remotely based around the stargate theme, i.e. zays, goa'uld, MGM can have you for it, all of it is copyrighted.

Mods come under Fan-fiction and not-for-profit by law or something.

so the case MGM have against mods is pretty damn non-existant.
